Un chant d'amour [œ̃ ʃɑ̃ damuʁ] (English: A Song of Love) is French writer Jean Genet's only film, which he directed in 1950. Because of its explicit (though artistically presented) homosexual content, the 26-minute movie was long banned.

6 LGBT Superheroes We Want To See In The DC Extended Universe

We're holding out for a hero.
From: NewNowNext
This week, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters, and launches the “DC Extended Universe,” a slate of superhero films that share continuity and characters.

With so many DC films in the pipeline, we’re excited over the possibility that some of these caped crusaders will be LGBT characters.

Here’s our shortlist of queer characters we’d like to see join the DC Extended Universe.

 1
Midnighter

Originally conceived by Warren Ellis as a more extreme analogue to Batman, this brutal gay antihero has developed a flirtatious camaraderie with super-dreamy Dick Grayson (a.k.a. the original Robin).

The Walking Dead’s Austin Nichols has the good looks and enough of a wicked twinkle in his eyes to take on the role of Midnighter. Bonus points if Kellan Lutz shows up as Midnighter’s sunny counterpart—and ex-boyfriend—Apollo!

25 Times White Actors Played People Of Color And No One Really Gave A S**t

Carey Mulligan
as
Irene

Film
Drive” (2011) is based on a novel of the same name and centers around a skilled Hollywood stuntman and getaway driver that runs into trouble when he tries to help out his neighbor, Irene.

Character’s Background
In the book, the stuntman’s neighbor is actually Irina — a young Latina woman in her twenties. In the movie, the character was re-written as Irene.

Actor’s Background
Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn said he re-wrote the character of Irina to be a white character because he couldn’t find a Latina actress he wanted to protect...?

“I couldn’t find any actress that would click with me personally,” he told The Huffington Post. “I couldn’t make a decision for some reason. I had all this talent in front of me and out of the blue I get a call from Carey because she wanted to meet me about doing a movie. She came by the house and she walked in and I realized, ‘Oh my God, this is what I was looking for. I wanted to protect her’ ... And I knew that was the Driver’s motivation.”

But these are just a handful of examples from a long list of cringe-worthy and shameless casting decisions in Hollywood. We could also talk about Emma Stone as part-Asian Allison Ng in “Aloha,” Justin Chatwin as Goku in “Dragonball: Evolution,” Fred Astaire in blackface in “Swing Time,” Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily in “Pan” — because it’s a seemingly never-ending story. And what have we learned after all this time?

CORRECTION
An earlier version of this story misidentified the name of the USC study. It is “Inequality in 700 Popular Films,” not “Inequality in 100 Popular Films.”

This article has been updated to note that Neeson first appears in the role of Batman’s adversary Ra’s al Ghul in “Batman Begins,” which was not originally listed here. Neeson also briefly reprises his role as Ra’s al Ghul in “The Dark Knight Rises.”

Matt Bomer To Play Montgomery Clift In Biopic: “I Saw Myself In Him”

"I feel like someone is responsible for letting people know how important he was."
From: NewNowNext
Matt Bomer is set to play Hollywood icon Montgomery Clift in new biopic, Monty Clift.

The project, which recently got a green light from HBO, is still very much in development, but seeks to tell the complicated story of both Clift’s immense fame and his personal struggles with his sexuality during the repressive era of the 1950s.

It was the complex nature of Clift’s past that drew Bomer to the biopic, he revealed in an interview with People.

“He had to deal with so many things that we don’t have to deal with as much these days,” explained Bomer. “So I thought it was an important story for people to remember. I feel like someone is responsible for letting people know how important he was – culturally, socially, but most importantly as an artist.”

He continued, “He was one of those really early screen icons for me to start with. Then once I learned the circumstances of his life, I realized how he was someone who did not want to be relegated to the times he lived in and was so progressive in so many ways.”

Clift, famous for his boy-next-door good looks and his particular style of method acting, was one of Hollywood’s favorite leading men until a car accident left him disfigured. He underwent plastic surgery, but the procedure left him with altered facial features, chronic medical conditions and a new dependency on drugs and alcohol. Eventually he died of a heart attack in 1966 at the ripe age of 45.

Bomer, who has proven his acting chops in both American Horror Story and White Collar, seems the perfect fit to take on the heavy realities of Clift’s life. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that he shares an uncanny resemblance with the star.

“Even as a young kid–before obviously I knew anything about him, or even myself–I saw him on screen and I thought, ’Oh wow he actually looks a lot like my brother,'” said Bomer.

“I kind of saw myself in him.”

20 Songs Everyone Knows That Didn’t Hit The Top 40!

#4
“How Soon Is Now”
The Smiths

Even though it never charted in the U.S., and only charted at #24 on the UK chart, 1985’s “How Soon Is Now” is one of the definitive (maybe the definitive) alt-rock anthems of the 80’s, and helped to introduce the mainstream world to the island unto himself Morrissey. The song’s legacy was increased when a cover version by Love Spit Love was used in the movie The Craft and as the theme song for the TV series Charmed.

I remember the first time I heard it, I thought the opening line was “I am the sun and the air.” Of course, this was before I knew Morrissey and discovered he couldn’t possibly have written such an upbeat lyric.

That transitional period: Jesse McCartney

March 24, 2008
From: Favorite Hunks & Other Things
Oh that transitional period for young stars. Jesse McCartney has been filling up pages of teen magazines for the last few years. His appearances are starting to be less frequent. No longer able to play the teen on a WB drama, or draw the 12 year old girls into concerts, McCartney is in that stage where he has to grow up and try to find an audience beyond his old fan base. Oh how Hollywood is riddled with actors and singers who were unable to make that change. They either went into other area's of the business (ala 70's Shaun Cassidy, who was the biggest star around for about 3 years, then nothing), or they leave Hollywood unable to find work, or the saddest, the stick around Hollywood, taking gigs on reality television and spend most of their earnings on drugs. There are a few who make it past this awkward stage to become stars as adults, but the list is short. Here are some pics from Jesse's newest music video. Wonder who he is trying to draw in with this video...

Nyle DiMarco Performs A Killer Cha-Cha On “Dancing With The Stars”

Future winner right here!
From: Favorite Hunks & Other Things
America’s Next Top Model winner Nyle DiMarco came out of the gate guns blazing during his Dancing With the Stars debut on the show’s 22nd season premiere Monday night, impressing both the judges and viewers at home with an absolutely stellar cha-cha to DNCE’s “Cake by the Ocean.”

Nyle and his partner, pro dancer Peta Murgatroyd, scored a 23 of 30, even despite an injury earlier in the day that sent Nyle to the hospital.

Since judges take personality and flair into account, we can’t help but point out Nyle probably jacked up the couple’s score a few points by ripping his shirt open toward the beginning.

Nyle told People last week that since he is deaf, he’d be dancing to the vibrations in the bass he can feel. But things didn’t go exactly according to plan last night.

Speaking with People after the show last night, Nyle said he couldn’t feel vibrations when the performance began, but trucked through the dance anyhow. “She’s dancing to the music, I just follow her with my eyes,” he said.

Check it out below:

North Carolina Lawmakers Pass Bill To Ban All Local LGBT Rights Ordinances

Senate Democrats walked out of the building, refusing to vote on "this effort to roll back the clock in this state."
From: NewNowNext

Both the House of Representatives and Senate in North Carolina voted in favor of a bill on Wednesday that would ban all the state’s cities from enacting nondiscrimination ordinances designed to protect LGBT people.

The House held a special session to vote on the bill, which passed with an 83-25 vote within just an hour of its introduction.

Very soon after, the Senate also passed the bill by a vote of 32-0, but only Republicans were in attendance, as the Democrats were disgusted by the bill and walked out instead of voting.

“We’re not participating in this effort to roll back the clock in this state,” said Senate Minority Leader Dan Blue.

The bill would also void all of North Carolina’s current LGBT rights ordinances, including the one recently passed in Charlotte that is set to go into effect on April 1.

Lawmakers chose to rush through the vote — the State legislature wasn’t even due back in session until the end of April — in order to block the Charlotte ordinance, which would allow transgender people to use restrooms that coincide with their gender identity.

“What we’re doing is preserving a sense of privacy that people have long expected in private facilities and we are restoring and clarifying…the existing authority and limits of authority of local government,” said Republican bill sponsor and Charlotte representative Dan Bishop.

The bill now travels to the desk of Governor Pat McCrory to determine whether it gets vetoed or turned into a law.

New Opera Revisits “Lavender Menace” Scare Of The 1950s

"It's a story that hasn't been told."
From: NewNowNext
Often overshadowed in history books by the communist witch-hunt, the McCarthyist era’s “Lavender Scare,” a period in which thousands of gay men and women were outed and fired from US government jobs, is set to be the subject of a new opera.

Fellow Travelers,” which will premiere June 17 at Cincinnati Opera, will throw a spotlight on this dark period in LGBT history, in which Wisconsin senator Joe McCarthy waged a vicious campaign against purported subversives, most famously through his Communist blacklist.

The opera charts the furtive and thrilling romance between a young newspaper intern Timothy Laughlin and a dashing State Department official, Hawkins Fuller, both of whom have to come to terms with their sexuality while attempting to navigate the upper echelons of Washington society in the 1950s.

“It’s just a story that hasn’t been told,” director Kevin Newbury said after a preview of “Fellow Travelers” in New York on Sunday.

“There are all sorts of dramatic works on stage or on screen about the Red Scare or about communism but the Lavender Scare has received relatively little attention.”

Historians estimate that as many as 10,000 government employees were outed and fired during this period, with many driven to suicide.

Although popular opinion quickly turned against McCarthy, it wasn’t until a 1995 ruling under President Bill Clinton that the United States government lifted its ban on LGBT government employees.
